Original 1969 Beatles Christmas Retail Hanging Mobile
Capitol Records Store Display – Complete 7 Panel Mobile
During the Christmas season of 1969, record stores across the United States hung this striking Capitol Records Beatles retail display mobile from their ceilings to promote Beatles albums during the busiest shopping season of the year.
Seven classic Beatles album covers cascade down from a bold green header card reading:
“Hung Up For A Gift? Give The Beatles!”
Designed to stop shoppers in their tracks and encourage holiday gift purchases, this mobile is one of the most visually memorable pieces of Beatles retail promotional material from the Capitol Records era.
More than fifty years later, this example remains complete and intact, with all seven panels present.
Albums Featured on the Display
Each panel features a Beatles album cover produced specifically for this promotional mobile:
- Rubber Soul
- Revolver
- Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
- The Beatles (White Album)
- Yellow Submarine
- Magical Mystery Tour
- Abbey Road
The panels are connected by the original white sunburst disc connectors and suspended from the iconic green header card.
A Snapshot of the Beatles Catalog in 1969
Abbey Road was released in September 1969. This mobile was produced and distributed to record stores shortly afterward for the 1969 Christmas retail season.
As a result, the display captures a unique moment in Beatles history — presenting seven landmark albums together at the exact moment the band’s era was coming to an end.
Few promotional displays so clearly represent the complete Beatles catalog at the close of the 1960s.
Why These Displays Are Rare
Retail promotional displays like this were produced strictly for record store marketing campaigns.
They were hung from ceilings or placed in store windows to promote album sales during major retail seasons. Once the promotion ended, most were discarded.
Because of this, surviving examples — especially complete hanging mobiles — are extremely scarce today.
Condition
Overall VG condition. Displays beautifully.
- All seven album panels present
- Original header card present
- Rubber Soul panel has a small surface blemish in the title area
- Several panels have tape present at connection points on both front and back surfaces
- Tape is visible in the photos and disclosed for accuracy
- Light age-appropriate wear consistent with over five decades of careful storage
For a complete Beatles hanging retail mobile from 1969, this is a remarkable survivor.

Provenance
This piece comes from the Jack Kunkle Collection.
Jack Kunkle worked for a Capitol Records distribution warehouse in Pennsylvania and preserved Beatles promotional materials beginning in the early 1970s. Items from this collection provide a rare glimpse into the promotional materials that were distributed to record stores during the Beatles and Apple Records era.
When noted in the listing, a printed copy of the newspaper article documenting the collection acquisition will be included.
Collector Notes
Original record store promotional displays from the Beatles era are among the most fascinating forms of music memorabilia.
Unlike consumer posters or album inserts that were sold directly to the public, items like this were produced specifically for record store marketing campaigns. They were designed to attract attention, promote album sales, and help retailers showcase new Beatles releases.
Because these displays were intended only for short promotional use, most were discarded once the campaign ended. Surviving examples provide a rare look into how Beatles records were marketed inside stores during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Pieces connected to landmark releases such as Abbey Road, The White Album, and other Apple Records-era projects are particularly sought after by collectors.
This item is part of the Vinyl Vogue Beatles memorabilia collection sourced from a former Capitol Records distribution warehouse employee, making it an especially interesting artifact from the history of record retail.
